The Wolf

Abby wrote the story below for a writing contest through school. We thought it was due on December 9, but that actually meant the story was due December 2 because it had to be to the contest people by December 9. Abby was really bummed. But, we convinced her that it would become part of our family's stories, our family's library. (And, since then, I emailed her teacher who told us if we could get her the story tomorrow morning, she could still get it in. Yeah!) So, I present you with...

The Wolf

by Abby Gawrych

One rainy day, a boy and his friend were walking home from a birthday party. They were talking about the party when one of the boys, Jake, saw something out of the corner of his eye. Something was glancing at him in the bushes! He couldn’t tell what it was so he just kept talking to his friend. They were almost to their houses so they said “good-bye,” and walked away.

When Jake got home his mother said, “Hello. How was the party?” He said that it was fine. After Jake talked to his mom for a couple minutes, he went to his room. He tried to figure out what was in the bushes earlier. He had seen that the animal was black, so he tried to think of black animals. Jake came up with a black cat and that was all. He only saw the face so he didn’t the body or the size of the mysterious animal.

The next day he was walking to the park he saw the creature right there on the playground! This time he saw the whole figure. It was a wolf! He decided not to go to the park and instead went home and straight up to his room. On his way back from the park he thought of a plan. His plan was to follow the wolf. The wolf might lead him somewhere interesting. He waited and waited but the wolf would not come back.

But the next day, he saw the wolf was in his front yard! The wolf slowly stepped away, paw by paw, and Jake followed him. The wolf just led him to the park so he went home.

The next day Jake’s mom and dad were gone, so he went to his friend’s house, but no one was home there. Jake walked over to his neighbor’s house, but they weren’t there either. Then he saw the wolf in the bush smiling. He tip-toed away, so Jake followed him. The wolf led him to a door underneath a big box! The wolf slowly crept into the door. There was a big tunnel that led somewhere dark. Jake kept following the wolf. There was a string that Jake didn’t see and he tripped over it. A big boulder was coming toward him! He ran and ran until he was out of breath. He found a little spot to hide in and the boulder passed.

He lost track of the wolf, so he just kept walking. When the tunnel came to an end there were two buttons. One was blue and the other was pink. Jake thought of what the buttons would do and decided to push the blue button. The ground started crumbling! Jake fell into a huge room that looked like a junkyard, and there were about 200 wolves surrounding Jake! His friends and family were locked up in a cage!

There was no way he could fight 200 wolves by himself, but he wanted to free his friends and family. There was a spark of courage left in him so he started fighting the wolves like he rehearsed it 1000 times! He beat all the wolves except for one. The wolf that had been watching him! It was an excellent battle! Then Jake won with a landslide victory! His friends and family escaped safely.

Jake tells his story over and over again and I think it’s truly my favorite!!

Abby,

I'm very impressed with your fantastic story. It was so creative and you did a great job making me curious about what would happen next. I didn't think it would end up scary! I'm really glad Jake was able to save his family & friends.

My favorite line was "there was a spark of courage left in him" -- great job Abby. I'm so proud of you!

Love, Nicole
