Matter of time

Abby had to have two teeth pulled yesterday. She really was a trooper, even thought she was dreading it all day. She got her entire bottom jaw numbed, and then two of the bigger baby teeth in the back came out. This is the second time she's had to have teeth pulled, so I guess she's a pro. She even had a softball game that night that she pitched in, and it wasn't until the very end that she complained that her mouth and jaw hurt a little bit.

That night, she put her teeth under her pillw, but was worried that the case would open up. I had her put it by the pillow by the edge of the bed (you can't even find her in her bed she has so much stuff in there!) and assured her it would be just fine. And then I promptly forgot about it, and Dave is out of town.

This morning, Abby came walking into my room and said, "The tooth fairy didn't come." Ugh. Quick brain! Make up something. But it was early, and my brain wasn't working. She climbed into bed with me and said, "How come the tooth fairy didn't come?" I just looked at her and said, "Do you want to know the secret?" She nodded, and I said you've been asking a lot, right? Then she asked if I was the tooth fairy.

Yup, that's me.

Then she asked me if Nolan knew. Nope. Then she was quiet. Then said, "Are you Santa Claus too?" I nodded. To which she quickly replied, "I can't believe you give us all that stuff!" Followed closely by, "Will I still get presents?"

I just laughed, assured her that she would, and asked her to be my helper going forward. I think she may enjoy that role even more!

Shorn

On Sunday after church, I took the boys to get their hair cut. Nolan is always easy... #2 razor, please!

But wait... Maybe that's not Nolan? Maybe it's MAX who is looking a lot like Nolan these days! That hair! Those beautiful curls! I nearly cried. But he has wanted to do this for so, so long. And it's just hair. Who am I to disappoint?

So happy and excited! Check out the hair in his lap.

Now I can't even tell him apart from Nolan...

He probably thought he'd have fewer people touching his hair with his new 'do, but I think everyone is rubbing his head because they can't believe it. I just wonder what it will grow back like!

Too close for comfort

Woman seriously injured, freeway closed after Washington County crash - 620 WTMJ - Milwaukee's Source for Local News and Weather

Yesterday on my way to work, there was an accident about a quarter mile up from me. Traffic really slowed, and I saw the first cop come. I saw him get out of his car and run to a flipped over SUV. Then I went past and didn't think about it too much.

Later that day, a guy I work with asked me how my commute was that morning. For him, it took three hours to get to work, and he lives near me. That's when I remembered the accident and looked it up. Apparently the entire highway was shut down, flight for life had to come, and the girl is in serious condition.

All leading me to wonder... what if I didn't come back inside because I forgot something? What if I were closer? What if I were 10 minutes later and I didn't get through? I'm sure she was just on her way to work and ended up in the hospital. It's just crazy the twists and turns of life!

TEXT OF STORY LINK:
WEST BEND - Authorities shut down lanes of U.S. 41/45 southbound in Washington County due to a three-vehicle crash where a woman had serious injuries.
The crash happened between the Holy Hill Road and Lannon Road exits around 7:20 a.m. Tuesday.
All three lanes had to be closed at the time of the crash. After about one hour to clean up the scene, those lanes were re-opened.
"The accident occurred in all three lanes of traffic," said Germantown Police Chief Peter Hoell to Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jon Byman.
"The most serious damage and injury was the result of a rollover. (The driver) had to be extricated and transported (to a local hospital) via Flight for Life."
That driver, a 49-year-old woman, had injuries that authorities described as serious.
Two other people left the scene with what Hoell described as minor injuries.
Northbound lanes were closed so Flight for Life could land and assist the woman. Those lanes have been re-opened.
Germantown Police said later on Tuesday morning that a 23-year-old woman was driving in the center lane when she made what was described as an "unsafe lane change."
Her car went into the right lane and collided into a truck that a 60-year-old driver was operating.
Then, her car went into the left lane and struck another vehicle being driven by the 49-year-old woman. That woman's car rolled over.
Police said there were no passengers in any of the vehicles involved in the crash.
People were found standing outside their stopped cars on U.S. 41/45 southbound after the crash.
In the fall of 2011, someone lost their life along the same stretch of highway during a crash in the rain. That crash involved a semi and other vehicles.
"There's a curve, an incline and a pitch to it," said Hoell to TODAY'S TMJ4's Nick Montes. "When it's raining or snowing, you're not going straight and flat."

Oh yeah, Baby

The girl can't say much, but this she has down to a tee.

The other thing she has perfected is, "Why?" Why Mommy? Why Daddy? Why? Why? Why? Now, understand we understand little of what she actually says. So "Why" coming from a 2/3 year old is perfectly normal. From her? A little crazy. I just shake my head and smile.

My books

Truly the best thing about blogging are the books I get. Since I started, I've gotten one book for each year of blogging, which means I just got book #4 in the mail today. Every time a new one arrives, I get out the old ones and look through. I remember writing so much of it, and it seems like not that long ago. But the pictures of the kids... they were so little! And they're so big in the most recent book! Among all four books, there are over 920 pages of memories. When blogging seems like just too much, and I can't imagine doing just one more thing, I look at those books and am so thankful to have them. And I hope one day they'll be as happy to have them as I had fun writing about them.

1917

Last week, Abby was able to travel back in time to 1917. As the fourth graders do every year, she went with her class to Ye Olde Schoolhouse to see a little bit what school was like way back when. She was slightly embarassed by the outfit in the morning, but by the time she got to school, I think she was good to go.

I think she was adorable! She and Dave decorated the can, which was the perfect touch.

And, not to be outdone, Alina did Ye Olde Preschool with Max and Ava. They made bread, which to me is big enough on its own. But they also MADE butter, jam and peanut butter. They visited an antique auction to see all the old stuff. They checked things out from both now and early times (contacts vs. spectacles; to go coffee cup vs a tin cup). I'm just glad that I get to use all the things from now instead of from way back when!

Happy Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day last Sunday, Alina did an Earth Day week with the kids. Thank goodness someone teaches them something around here!

They used some already-written-on paper to make this masterpiece. They cut circles on it and decided what they woud do for Earth day. Nolan will take 4-minute showers. Abby will not leave the water on while brushing her teeth. Ava will give her apples with one bite out of them to the guinea pigs and Dave will recycle his beer bottles. See? Earth Day is alive and well!

After painting, they played in the "ocean" with all of these sea creatures. Aren't they cute?
But oh no!! What's that??? in the corner? An oil tanker! There's been an oil spill! (Who knew Exxon was so close to our house, and looks like vegetable oil?)
Whew! Max and Ava to the rescue! They cleaned off the oil and restored order to our oceans. Just in time!

Happy late Earth Day to all!

So much to Discover!

Alina took the Littles last week to Discovery World. I can't be sure, but I'm guessing they had a great time!

I took Abby and Ava to Discovery World about two years ago. Ava was in the backpack carrier, staring at a scuba diver in this tank. They have boards they can write on underwater to communicate to the visitors, and when we walked through, he wrote "Blink?" on a board. It was very funny, and to this day the kids still have staring contests with Ava!

The bathroom hand dryer! The most exciting part?
 Alina loves us!

So much to Discover, so little time...

Startling realizations

I had two jarring realizations today. Both are quite obvious, yet both hit me over the head.

#1... I was sitting in a retirement seminar and realized that in 8 years Abby will go to college. Eight. That is not very far away. She hasn't saved nearly enough money.

#2... In one month, school will be out for the summer. Duh, I know. But wow, one month, and Max will be a kindergartner, Abby in fifth grade and Nolan in third grade. And Ava in preschool. Wow.

It's just amazing to me that these things have such a "hit me over the head" effect. It literally leaves me spinning and disjointed. My world is out of control!
